Public Label Rights | PLR

Public Label Rights

In internet marketing, Public Label Rights is a license where the owner allows third party sites to use his own work while keeping most or all of the intellectual property rights to his work. The license is defined by the owner of the work and has no legal definition. Public Label Rights is derived from public labeling or GNU.

Similar licenses include General Public License (GNU), also used in internet marketing.

Use

The license is 100% FREE and is used for various digital products such as news, articles, ebooks, software, graphics, etc. However, people often use public label content that is widely distributed, to reduce the costs, and empower themselves to fight potently and compete with other successful marketers.

Public label content comes in many different languages and formats, including RSS News Feeds, buzzfeed rss, eBooks, reports, articles, graphics, videos, etc.

While licenses differ with each license owner, the basic premise is that the license permits users to publish the content without re-branding it under their own name and brand (i.e. using it legally, excluding copyright ownership). In general practice this means that the product can be published or shared without being modified, sold, resold or re-purposed in other formats. The authorship on the original product is always preserved for the license owner with unrestricted public label, users are often able to redistribute the same rights they've acquired to third party users although not all public label releases offer or permit license distribution from second hand users.

Marketers use public label products to gain more audience, and they often redistribute it using their own sites for online marketing through channels like article directories, content syndication, eBook directories, slide-sharing websites and similar.

Public label content comes with different rights depending on the license owner so it's important to thoroughly check each license prior to use, to get familiar with any restrictions and to avoid any possible legal complaints and problems in the future.

Advantages

Claimed advantages to using Public label Content are:

  •     Saving time.
  •     Saving money, compared to hiring a writer or buying exclusive rights
  •     Gaining exposure and increasing social media presence, compared to using private label content
  •     Gaining a reputation as a "pro" in a domain while knowing nothing about it.

Criticism

Due to public label being distributed to multiple customers without re-branding it under their own name and brand, marketers are often hesitant on incorporating public label content into their marketing campaigns. Public Label Content is best used as an "addition" rather than a 'source", meaning that users should consider working their own content or software before getting public label content and distributing it using their own sites.
